Born in Duisburg, Germany, in 1958, Andrea Stappert had made a life’s work of quietly observing and documenting the European art world’s most interesting personalities. She moved to Hamburg in 1979, where she studied painting with Sigmar Polke and other instructors at the Academy of Fine Arts, and moved to Cologne in 1985.

It was there that Stappert began her career as a photographer, initially taking portraits of German artist Martin Kippenberger. Always analogue and using natural light and settings, the autodidact’s work has since focused on the artist portrait, a logical extension of her close collaboration – and often friendships – with artists and other art-world figures. In 1998, Stappert moved to Berlin and has subsequently collaborated with a number of major art institutions in Germany and around the world. She currently lives in Berlin.

Michael Werner launched his first gallery in 1963, opening with the first exhibition of Georg Baselitz. Galleries were later established in Cologne (1969) and New York (1990). Michael Werner has worked with, and helped to launch, several of the most important artists of the twentieth century, including Marcel Broodthaers, James Lee Byars, Peter Doig, Jörg Immendorff, Per Kirkeby, Markus Lüpertz, A.R. Penck, Sigmar Polke and Don Van Vliet. This 580-page catalogue presents more than 800 artworks from the collection of Germany’s most renowned art dealer, including works from his donation to the Musée d’art moderne de la Ville de Paris. Thirty-nine artists–among them Arp, Picabia, Kirchner, Fautrier, Manzoni, Klein, Broodthaers, Beuys, Filliou and Byars–are represented in 20 chapters, where they are juxtaposed with commentary by contemporary critics. An appendix lists the works in the collection, all the shows of Michael Werner Gallery and a bibliography of its many publications.

The third volume on the Wemhöner Collection again confirms the unpredictability of Heiner Wemhöner’s view of art. In his everyday life, he is surrounded by sculptures by Stephan Balkenhol and the Italian avant-garde. The abstract stoneware by Ulrich Rückriem mirrors the controlled contoured bronzes of Tony Cragg. And while Ernesto Neto secured his way into the collection with oversized childhood memories, a ‘steel line’ by Bernar Venet is still waiting for the right spot. But what does Asta Gröting’s cast of an acre of land and the precariously buckled street posts by Bettina Pousttchi have to do with each other? The works are annotated by the art historian Ulrike Münter and chronicled in an interview with Heiner Wemhöner. The Berlin photographer Andrea Stappert portrays the sculptures at the spot where they found their place in Heiner Wemhöner’s life.
